Digital vs Physical Photo Books

0 Liked

In this fast-paced era where change and innovation is a constant, is there a place for memory making? Does anyone use photo albums anymore? You may be surprised to know that it is especially in this era where technology has advanced so much, memory making is made more efficient and accessible, through our phones and online editing softwares.

There’s always a place for memory making but where might you store these little memories? Should you store them digitally or physically?

Ask no more, here’s a quick summary on the pros and cons of each medium:

pros and cons of physical and digital photobook

What is a digital or physical photo book?

A digital photo book is a photo album that is stored virtually. It can be a collection of photos stored in a thumbdrive, or even a series of photos compiled on a pdf.

On the other hand, a physical photo book is something we are familiar with, which is a literal physical photo album that can be held in hands.

A digital photo book can be (but not limited to) a phone photo gallery, a series of photos on your Google drive, photos on your Instagram profile. They are essentially a place where a collection of photos are being stored virtually.

The pros of a digital photo book are as follows:

1. Portable

It can be stored in accessible places such as your online drive i.e. Dropbox, Google Drive.

2. Long durability

Yellowing pages or decolourised photos? Fret not, with a digital photobook, your photos will not regress in quality.

3. Can zoom in to as high definition as possible

Maybe you are a bit hard of seeing or there is a particular detail you need to zoom in on. Digital photo books allow you the function to zoom into photos. It’s a very convenient perk!

4. Can be reproduced

You don’t have to worry about the cost or inconvenience of reproduction, such as developing old film or reprinting photos. You can copy paste or email the photos and you are done!

The cons of a digital photo book are as follows:

1. Doesn’t have the physical touch

They are essentially virtual, so it’s unlike the experience we get when perusing a physical photo book. Some people might still find themselves drawn to the tactile feeling of a physical photo book.

A physical photo book is definitely something we are more familiar with, where most of us belong to a generation that has seen the move from paper to technology. We might find these printed photo books safely kept in the drawers of hoarded items, or in the shelves next to other books.

The pros of a traditional photobook are as follows:

1. Physical presence and tactile satisfaction

It just hits differently when in physical form. To add on, when it physically takes up space, it prompts the user to actually flip through the pages instead of our 50 000 photos heavy phone photo gallery that we hardly give a second look to.

2. Can be held in hand, friend-sized!

Something that can be placed in your hand as opposed to a television display of photos. This is more of a preference but it does feel good to hold it in your hands.

3. Older generations know how to use

It’s timeless and has no boundaries. There isn’t an ‘On’ button to access the device, all you have to do is flip the book open. Furthermore, if a drive hangs or a cd breaks, it may be hard for someone who isn’t tech savvy to troubleshoot.

4. More cherished because they are not as easily reproduced

As it is something that cannot always be reproduced, it will not be something we give a single look and move on from, which may be something we do with our virtually stored photos. It is certainly something we won’t take for granted.

The cons of a traditional photo book are as follows:

1. Ages with time

No matter how much maintenance is done for these old pieces of things, aging is a process that cannot be stopped. Yellowing and spots will appear.

Keeping memories is a way to keep connected to identity by reviewing the past. It’s a time capsule which evokes emotions of nostalgia and yearning. Whether you choose to consciously curate their memories through a digital medium or a physical photo album, as long it suits you and the concerned parties, there is no right way to do so. With FotoHub, we can provide you with an easy way to curate these memories with our online editor to be printed into a physical photo book
